If you have kids, chances are, marker and/or permanent marker may end up on your upholstery. If you need remove marker from your favorite couch or chair, vacuum the area to remove loose dirt or dust. You can try using rubbing alcohol or a hairspray (non oily variety)as your stain removing agent. Because you are working on upholstery, be very careful not to soak the fabric. Doing so may soak the stuffing and you may end up with both a stain and mildew. Apply small amounts at a time and blot carefully between applications.

Remember, it is not called "permanent" marker for no reason. Depending on how fresh the stain is, this method may not remove the stain completely.

Making Brass Polishing Less Arduous

If you have chosen Brass fixtures for your bathroom, they will look beautiful but they do require a certain amount of maintenance and cleaning. Although polishing brass might not be the most fun aspect of cleaning a bathroom, it doesn't have to be horrible. To shine your brass, cut a lemon in half and dip it in some sea salt. Rub this on the brass fixtures and wipe with a clean cloth. If you don't have a lemon or lemon juice close at hand, make a paste from vinegar, salt and flour. Rub the paste into the brass and dry it off with a thick cloth. Remember this: Before using a brass cleaning product, test it in a hidden area. Some brass cleaning products leave a film behind, or can damage your brass.

Plastic Container Stain Removal

If you stored tomato based products, such as a pasta sauce, in a plastic tupperware container, you may have stained it red. Heating the pasta in the microwave using plasic containers, will stain them permanantly. Washing the containers may help, but most likely they are stained beyond repair.

To avoid stains, spray your plastic bowls or tupperware with a no stick cooking spray to keep them from getting stained from red sauces. In addition, don't place a tomato based product in the microwave if you are using a plastic container. Plastic is pourous, so the tomato gets embedded in the pores.

If your container is already stained your first option is to fill the bowl with hot water and drop in a couple of denture tablets. Leave this concoction for a couple of hours and when you come back the stains may be gone. You can also try giving your containers a soak in one part bleach to two parts of water. Give the bowls a thorough rinse, maybe even a run through in the microwave, before using again.

Urine can seep into mattresses, deep within the surface area that can be easily cleaned. It is challenging to remove urine from inside a mattress, and without cleaning your mattress properly, you can create an ideal climate for bacteria and mold growth. Don't run out and replace your mattress right away. Your first step will be to blot up as much urine as possible with an absorbent cloth - white is preferable because you will be able to identify how much you are actually absorbing.

The newest cleaning products use peroxide and detergents to penetrate the stained area and to remove the stain and the odor. Spray a product such as PAWS - Pet Accident Washup Solution or Bio-OX Citrus Concentrate on the area, and allow it to soak into the mattress for approximately five minutes. Using a clean absorbent cloth, blot the area, for about a minute. Keep repeating this process until the mattress is dry. If you find that the mattress odor persists, repeat the process again.

You can keep most wood floors clean by sweeping or vacuuming and then damp mopping with clean water. You don't need much water - just rinse your mop thoroughly after each use since the excess water can dissolve protective floor coatings, potentially alter the color of the wood and may raise the grain to roughen the surface of the wood.

If your floors don't gather enough dirt to justify mopping every week, then you should not do it, as it will wear the wood floors faster. Sweeping is often all your floors need.

If you need to restore the shine of your wood floor after you get it clean, try damp mopping it with 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 tablespoons furniture polish in about one gallon of warm water. Vinegar is also useful for removing any soap residue or buildup.
Removing Lime and Mineral Deposits

If you have lime deposits, or other mineral deposits, you can easily remove them using commercial cleaners that contain organic acids. You should avoid products that contain hydrochloride salts. If you want to try a home made alternative, try making a paste of hydrogen peroxide and cream of tartar or cream of tartar with vinegar, preferably white. Scrub the paste lightly into the lime or mineral stain and wait for the paste to dry. Rinse the area completely and buff it dry with a towel or cleaning rag.
